You Have Swum Past Hundreds of Fish Without Knowing What You Were Looking At. That Ends Here.
A school of yellow fish, a solitary shape near a ledge, something with an odd mouth grazing the reef. Most divers watch this parade of fish on every single dive without ever attaching a name to any of it. There is a real skill to recognizing what you are seeing by shape, markings, and behavior, and it is learnable.
SSI Fish Identification teaches you to recognize common fish families of the Caribbean, Indo-Pacific, and Red Sea by body shape, mouth position, tail shape, and behavior. Self-paced academics, with an optional open water application dive. $150. Open to everyone, certified diver or not. Minimum age 10.
What You’ll Train
Primarily an academic course, with an optional open water application dive.
What defines a species, how fish are named, and how citizen scientists contribute to fish identification records.
How fish are classified, and the practical keys: body shape, markings, mouth position, tail shape, and behavior.
Common fish families of the Caribbean, Indo-Pacific, and Red Sea, including surgeonfish, triggerfish, wrasse, parrotfish, groupers, and angelfish.
An optional dive applying what you have learned to identify fish families in a real environment.
This Is Knowledge, Not a Skill Gap
Fish Identification is not about being a more advanced diver. It is about turning every fish you pass into something you can actually name and understand, on dives you have already been taking for years.
This course exists to replace a blur of color and motion with fish you can actually name, by family if not always by species.
